Unwilling to believe her friend is dead, Lara dives into the floodwaters and searches, eventually discovering him in what's left of his trailer, unconscious. They're then saved by Ray, a guide Lara hired who now demands the gold Jonah mentioned while Ray eavesdropped. Ray tries gunpoint; Lara gets the drop on him with her rock axe, and then literally as he goes over the cliff. A news helicopter soon finds the pair; they split, with Jonah going to a hospital and Lara heading to Ireland to consult Richard Croft's friend Professor Calahane. She hopes he can offer insight into the history of the pieces Jonah took from Yamatai. He translates some text, "He will have his house, wall, floor, roof and door. And each shae have a guardian, and each shall bear a calamity." He also identifies a carving as a vengeful figure called a makara, part woman and part animal. Lara receives a call from Reyes, and Calahane ejects her from the library. She hears from Reyes who wishes to meet. Reyes says everyone took a figure and that it had been Lara's idea! At that point Matsu demands the location of the pieces; he has come to retrieve them for his goddess, and failure to produce them will cost Reyes' daughter her life! Someone murders Calahane in his office, and takes the pieces Lara left with him; this individual is costumed to resemble the makara...
