Since his escape from police custody as Bruce Wayne, the only associate that Batman maintains any contact with is Alfred. But even with his long-time confidante, he refuses to discuss the matter of Bruce Wayne, referring to him as though he were a different person. And his own journals are no less disturbing. But Batman has work to do. Answering the signal, he finds Commissioner Akins, informing him of a serial killer enacting grim vengeance against Gotham's criminal underworld. And now it appears that this vigilante killer has abducted two city councilmen, who will die unless Batman can save them tonight.
