Description
The Return of the Anakronus / Just a Story / Crisis on Earth-Three
"The Return of Anakronus!": While watching the JLA members' appearance at an annual telethon on TV, Snapper Carr and his family suddenly find their home invaded, and themselves held hostage, by a costumed maniac named Anakronus. He claims to be a super-villain ally of the Lord of Time who had fought the Justice League in a previously unpublicized adventure (following the events of issue #11). He has Snapper contact the super-heroes with a ransom demand. Snapper tips off Green Lantern over the phone, though, and the Atom travels to the scene along the phone wires. Red Tornado and Elongated Man also show up to subdue the villain, who proves to be an ordinary fanatic, with no special powers or weapons. "Detour": This story is reprinted from Comic Cavalcade #18. "Crisis on Earth-Three!": Having grown bored of being undefeated criminals in their home universe of Earth-Three, a reality where evil is the dominant force over good), the Crime Syndicate of America (whose members are like evil versions of the Justice League of Earth-One) learn of Earth-One and decide to commit crimes in that reality, hoping to be challenged by the Justice League of Earth-One. Each of the CSA members battles a JLA member (Ultraman fighting the Flash, Johnny Quick fighting Batman, Superman battling Power Ring, Super Woman battling Wonder Woman, and Owl Man battling Green Lantern). Although the JLA members manage to gain the upper hand against their Earth-Three counterparts, the CSA have a failsafe: by saying the magic word "Volthoom", they transport themselves and their opponent to Earth-Three where the Earth-One counterparts are immobilized and made prisoner. Having claimed supremacy over the Justice League, the Crime Syndicate decides to prove their ability to prove themselves superior to others and decide to target the Justice Society of America of Earth-Two, hoping to clear the playing field for a final battle between the JLA and CSA. However, the JSA having detected Ultraman's viewing their reality contact the JLA and learn that the CSA is coming to battle them, and warn their Earth-Two counterparts of their secret weapon: The magic word Volthoom. (This story is reprinted from Justice League of America #29.)
